Rare 19th Century Chinese Ancestral Hanging Scroll – Literate Portrait in Landscape
This large-scale ancestral scroll (zu xiang) is a significant example of 19th-century Qing Dynasty portrait art. Unlike standard formal portraits, this piece uniquely integrates a central patriarch and his descendants within an elaborate "Moving-Point Perspective" landscape.
A high-ranking patriarch is depicted as a literate in a vibrant indigo blue robe, surrounded by his children and attendants serving tea. This "intergenerational" layout symbolizes lineage, filial piety, and the continuation of family prosperity. At the same time the lively portrait conveys a relaxed moment in the leasured life of this family.
Hand-painted with rich mineral pigments on paper, the work features intricate details on the garments and a refined background showing distant mountains, water, and traditional architecture. Classic literate accessories are visible in the painting, notably brushes and paper rolls in a burl brush pot, completed scroll paintings, bonsai trees in pots, all denoting the typical occupations of the sitter's social class.
A classic hanging scroll format, professionally mounted for display.
As an authentic antique from the late 1800s, this piece shows wear commensurate with age, including light creasing and minor pigmentation fading, which adds to its historical character.
Dimensions of the portrait: 125 cm x 65 cm.
Dimensions of the whole panel: 195 cm 77 cm.
