Vizighotic Gelbgold Ring
A gold ring, the shank of which is decorated with a plaited rope pattern. There is a knop to the shoulder. The oval bezel is engraved with an equal armed cross, and there are Latin letters between each of the arms. Internal diameter 15mm.
The Visigoths were a division of the Goths, an East-Germanic people. Evidence of them prior to their interaction with the Romans is limited. They were however, the first people to invade Rome and they defeated the Roman Emperor, Valens, in battle. Their tumultuous relations with the Roman Empire culminated in the sack and invasion of Rome in 410 A.D. This was the first time Rome had been taken by a foreign army and signals the start of the Empire’s decline.
