Ancient Roman silver ring with a rectangular bezel which is engraved in two lines: VTI above FELIX. The hoop is of rounded D-section form, slightly tapering towards the shoulders, which expand to support the bezel.
-> The inscription relates to the well-known Roman expression “Utere Felix”, meaning “Use (this) in good fortune” or “Enjoy with good luck”. Such rings were worn as personal adornment and as expressions of goodwill and prosperity.
Outside diameter: ± 23,3 mm
Inside diameter: ± 16,3 - 19,5 mm
Bezel: ± 6,8 mm
Condition: intact and wearable condition. Surface wear consistent with age and use. Minor abrasions and areas of patination visible on the hoop and bezel. The inscription remains legible.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF-format): available upon request.
-> Inscribed rings bearing auspicious formulas such as “Utere Felix”, “Vivas”, or similar well-wishing expressions were widespread throughout the Roman Empire. They reflect personal identity, literacy, and the cultural importance of fortune and prosperity in Roman daily life.
-> The word “Felix” conveyed happiness, success and divine favour, and was frequently associated with both private individuals and imperial titulature. Rings of this type provide a tangible insight into Roman personal belief and social custom.
Material:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
