Very impressive antique Ottoman Empire Islamic silver ring. The ring has a prominently raised bezel set with a carnelian intaglio depicting a seated warrior or dignitary. The figure appears to hold a long spear or staff. Several pellet motifs decorate the surrounding field.
The substantial silver ring is elaborately decorated with engraved ornamentation along the shoulders and sides. The shoulders are further embellished with gilt appliqué elements forming stylised scrollwork and knot-like motifs. The bezel is framed by a beaded border. The outer centre of the tapering ring band is decorated with a small raised silver knob, forming a rounded boss projecting slightly from the surface of the band.
-> Figural scenes depicting seated figures, warriors or dignitaries are themes frequently encountered in Persian and Central Asian artistic traditions that influenced Ottoman decorative arts.
Outside diameter: ± 26,5 mm
Inside diameter: ± 19,5 - 22,9 mm
Bezel height: ± 9,9 mm
Bezel: ± 29 mm
Condition: good solid condition and wearable. The ring shows some wear, and certain decorative details have become slightly smoothened and worn through years of use (see last picture, top of the ring). The engraved carnelian remains clear and the decorative silverwork retains its character with a light patina.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
Material:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
