Prager Ried Klaus Smaragd 2017 & 2018 - Wachau - 2 Magnumflasche (1,5 L)

Like the Achleiten vineyard, at an altitude of approximately 300 meters. However, Achleiten faces west, while the Klaus vineyard is an east-facing slope towards Dürnstein. Due to its microclimate and wind direction, this vineyard remains completely free of botrytis. Even the early generations geographically separated the Klaus vineyard from Achleiten, as a fault line runs through the soil, although it is essentially the same slope. The soil of the Klaus vineyard is the poorest in the Prager estate, and therefore unsuitable for Grüner Veltliner. It consists of gneiss from granite, baked at temperatures around 500°C, but is nowhere near as hard as other gneiss formations in Achleiten or true granite, which was formed at 800-900°C. This means that the Klaus vineyard allows certain roots to penetrate deeply. However, the soil is so barren and impoverished that a Grüner Veltliner would simply starve. Riesling is much more capable of forming symbiotic relationships with fungal cultures and other organisms, thus benefiting itself. The Klaus vineyard is probably the most expressive of most Wachau Rieslings; perhaps only Veyder-Malberg's Buschenberg achieves this level of expressiveness. The wine is dark-fruited, highly mineral and radiant, almost mystical in its character. In comparison, it is significantly more austere, assertive, and very vibrant. Salty and incredibly mineral. Ripe citrus fruits and green apple, with hints of green apricot. Alongside these are bright stone fruit notes, no Wachau baroque style whatsoever, extremely purist, never charming in its youth, but always razor-sharp and precise, yet underpinned by such incredibly dark minerality. Apricot, cassis, dark berries, beeswax, blond tobacco, black walnut, blossom honey. Despite the dark minerality, it possesses a magnificent purity on the nose and palate. Drama and tension from start to finish. Endless power, consistently high acidity without any harshness. Extremely juicy, the fruit always providing support. Incredibly long, yet never tiring. This wine has few equalers, one of Austria's truly great Rieslings!
