Ogata Korin-style maki-e【光琳蒔絵】 - Kasten - Perlmutt, Naturstein - KōrinMakie Suzuribako【硯箱】

This refined Kōrin-style Maki-e Suzuribako【硯箱】 from the Late Meiji period is an excellent example of traditional Japanese lacquer artistry. Inspired by the aesthetic principles established by Ogata Kōrin, the design reflects elegance, asymmetry, and a sophisticated decorative balance. The surface is adorned with delicate orchid motifs executed in fine gold maki-e. Portions of the blossoms are enhanced with luminous raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay, creating a refined contrast against the lacquer ground. The piece is entirely handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. The interior includes a natural stone suzuri (ink stone) and a matching suiteki (water dropper), preserving its original function as a complete writing box. The original wooden storage box is a traditional slide-lid type (kiribako) and is inscribed “Kōrin Maki-e Suzuribako,” further supporting its traditional presentation. The Late Meiji period was a time when Japanese craftsmanship was highly appreciated both domestically and internationally, and this work reflects the high standards of that era.
