Offered here is a “museum-quality copy” of Real Free Press Illustratie No. 5, published in Amsterdam in 1972. While most surviving copies of this underground tabloid are found with a heavy horizontal mail-fold and significant "newsprint tanning," this specific specimen is entirely unfolded, flat and framed. The cover features the legendary artwork of Robert Crumb, including the iconic "Mickey & Minnie" parody at the base, and contributions from Gilbert Shelton. It is a pinnacle piece of 1970s counterculture "Comix" history. The History & Provenance: This publication hails from the iconic Dutch underground shop 'The Real Free Press (The RFP)' in Amsterdam. During the height of The RFP (in the hippie times) they published 'The Real Free Press magazine', original comics, recordings, imported comics, magazines and books. The RFP was run by Olaf Stoop and Martin Beumer, it grew out of the Provo scene and was the only publishing house known to have ran on drug money. Their shop was affectionately known as "boek en dopie" among the clientèle. In the start, it was weed, but later this changed to cocaine, which took away all the fun: they never produced much more afterwards. The RFP saw it's demise when Olaf got arrested in 1978. After a series of altercations, Martin went to live on Mallorca. Neither lived to see the New Millennium.
