Ancient Phoenician to Eastern Mediterranean mosaic glass spindle whorl in green and yellow.
-> The Phoenicians improved the glass making techniques which they learned from the Egyptians and often decorated the glass with stripes or wavy zig-zag patterns. Phoenician cities were great exporters and spread the Phoenician art throughout the Mediterranean from the 8th to the 2nd century BC.
-> Spinning was carried out by attaching fibres, such as wool or flax, to a spindle fitted with a whorl that acted as a weight. As the spindle was set in motion, it twisted the fibres into a continuous thread, with the whorl helping to maintain momentum and even tension. The thickness of the thread could be controlled by the spinner, making it possible to produce yarns of varying quality for different types of textiles.
Maximum diameter: ± 28,4 mm
Height: ± 14,7 mm
Condition: good condition, surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
A fine example of Phoenician craftsmanship.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
