Altägyptisch Silber Amulet - 1.1 cm

A fine Ancient Egyptian silver amulet fashioned in the shape of a head. The head is hemispherical in shape, tapering from a flat, horizontal top. Two bovine ears extend horizontally, detailed with pointed tips and a small groove. The facial features are delicately rendered, with careful indentations portraying the eyes, nose and mouth. At the chin, a rectangular protrusion is engraved with two vertical channels, portraying a neck. A ridged suspension loop features at the top. The reverse is flat and unadorned. Wear and tarnishing to the surface, consistent with age. The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife. Hathor head amulets were popular from the New Kingdom to the Greco-Roman period. Hathor, the goddess of love and protector of the dead, is shown as a woman with the ears of a cow, wearing a distinctive, heavy wig with the ends coiled into spirals. Measurements: L 1.1cm x W 1cm Weight: 0.67g Provenance: Ex UK Collection 1920s-1940s. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as an analysis of metals(XRF-test) have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
