A Stag Antler Netsuke of a Shishi on a Ball , Edo Period Early 19th Century A finely carved stag antler netsuke depicting a powerful shishi clambering over a large spherical ball, grasping it firmly with its front paws while supported on the hind legs, the posture dynamic yet balanced. The expression fierce and animated, with open mouth and well-defined features; the fur rendered in finely incised lines, heightened with darkened sumi accents enhancing depth and contrast. The underside and rear displaying the natural porous texture of the antler, contrasting with the smooth, worn surfaces of the ball. A deep, well-carved himotoshi passes from the side through the base, integrated naturally into the composition. The surface developed a rich honey-yellow patina with darker tonal areas to the extremities, consistent with age and handling.
