Asagao Takezusa Zu (牵牛花竹草図) - Goanshi (五庵子) - Japan - Spätes Edo – frühes Meiji (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Asagao Takezusa Zu (牵牛花竹草図) Artist: Goanshi (五庵子) Technique: Hand-painted ink and colour on silk Signature & Seal: Signed and sealed by the artist Sheet size: 21.8 × 26.2 cm (8.6 × 10.3 in) Material: Silk Date: Late Edo – early Meiji period, mid-to-late 19th century (c. 1860–1890) This work, combining Japanese literati conception and lyrical elegance, is an ink and colour painting on silk by Goanshi (五庵子), a Japanese literati painter of the late Edo–Meiji period (19th century). Rooted in the classic “negative space” aesthetic of Japanese literati painting, the silk shows a natural warm aged patina, lending an antique elegance. The artist uses freehand brushwork to depict the main subject: soft blue-grey morning glories (朝顔) with delicate petals and winding vines; beside them, strong bamboo (笹) with sharp, lively ink leaves, creating a harmonious balance between soft flowers and firm bamboo. The colouring is subtle and restrained: light green for leaves, pale blue for petals, with clear ink gradations, fully expressing the simple, lyrical spirit of Japanese Nanga (literati painting). On the left, the work is signed “Goanshi” (五庵子) in running script, with a red square seal “Goanshi In” (五庵子印) below. The cinnabar seal shows natural age-related oxidation; the script is clear and matches the signature perfectly. The piece retains traces of old mounting. With age, the silk shows natural oxidation, toning and minor mould spots, with no damage or restoration. Overall in good condition for its age. This work is sold unframed; the images are for display purposes only to show the effect after framing.
