Butsudan - Orin 御鈴 (buddhistische Glocke) mit einem Durchmesser von etwa 21 cm, die in buddhistischen Altären - 1970-1980, 1980-1990, 1990-2000

This is a bell set for a Japanese Buddhist altar. It includes a bell, cushion, base, and bell rod. The bell is approximately 20cm in diameter, larger than the bells typically found in homes. It may have been used in a large Buddhist altar or a sacred place like a temple. It produces a beautiful tone when struck. It is used during sutra chanting, and is rung to signal pitch and to synchronize tone and rhythm. It is often rung before, during, and at the end of chanting. Zen Buddhism is a sect with a tradition of ascetic practice centered on meditation and zazen, and it is said that bells were used to signal the beginning and end of meditation and to signal the time for zazen. The sound signaling the start and end of chanting is important and played a central role in rituals at temples and training centers.
