Coin Story:
The 1937 A minted German Third Reich 1 Pfennig copper coin is a circulating currency issued during the Nazi Germany (Third Reich) period, belonging to the last copper version of the 1936-1940 series. The obverse features the Nazi eagle emblem holding a swastika pattern, surrounded by an oak wreath, symbolizing the power and nationalist ideology of the Nazi regime; the reverse displays the denomination "1 Reichspfennig" and the year, accompanied by the inscription of the German Reich (Deutsches Reich).
After Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Germany entered the Third Reich (Drittes Reich) period, and coin designs were quickly Nazified. Starting in 1936, the 1 Pfennig coin featured on the obverse the Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) clutching an oak wreath with a swastika, along with "Deutsches Reich" and the year. The reverse showed the denomination "1 Reichspfennig" flanked by two oak leaves, symbolizing the strength and natural resilience of the Germanic people.
These bronze coins served as everyday circulating currency and symbolized the regime’s authority and ideology in daily life. The year 1937 marked a peak period of economic recovery and military expansion in the Third Reich. From 1940 onward, due to copper shortages during the war, the composition switched to zinc; thus, the pre-1940 bronze versions represent the classic pre-war Nazi coinage. The "A" mintmark denotes the Berlin Mint, the largest and most productive mint of the era.
As a World War II Nazi artifact, the collection value of this coin mainly comes from its historical significance, rather than its face value or material (copper). The MS64RB grade enhances its appeal, suitable for collectors of the Nazi period or German coins, symbolizing the economic and propaganda heritage of the Third Reich. It witnessed the historical turning point of the Third Reich from coming to power in 1933 to its collapse in 1945, becoming a World War II artifact, reminding people of the dark chapter of Nazi totalitarianism.
