Vase - Rohzink - Französische Spelter-Urnen - H: 34 cm
A handsome matched pair of French cassolette urns in cast spelter with warm bronze patination, raised on square onyx plinths, dating to the late nineteenth century.
Each urn follows the classical amphora formula that dominated French decorative arts from the Second Empire through the Third Republic: a generous ovoid body rising from a gadrooned lower section, a rope-twist collar at the stem, a fluted spreading foot, and a fitted lid with acorn finial. The scroll handles are elaborately worked with foliate and volute detailing — a mark of confident casting quality.
What makes this pair distinctive is the figural relief on the body: a long-necked wading bird — heron or egret — rendered in a naturalistic pose amid fruiting branches and trailing garlands. This is a clear articulation of the Japonisme aesthetic that swept French decorative production in the 1870s–1890s. The reverse of each urn carries a draped swag relief in a more conventional Neoclassical register, demonstrating the characteristic Third Republic synthesis of two vocabularies.
The plinths are square slabs of pink-veined onyx with four turned bun feet, original to the urns and in good condition. The underside of each plinth (visible in the base shot) retains the central fixing point typical of period spelter assembly.
