Außergewöhnlicher Turmalin-Kristall • 0,90 ct • Einzigartige österreichische Flagge Terminalzonung - Höhe: 15 mm - Breite: 3 mm- 0.18 g - (1)
Description:
A rare example of terminal planar colour zoning in elbaite tourmaline, this crystal is defined by an uncommon chromatic organisation concentrated exclusively at its termination, contrasting with a structurally stable and uniform prismatic body.
Unlike standard zoned tourmalines where colour evolves progressively along or across the crystal, this specimen exhibits a sharp, horizontal banding sequence perpendicular to the growth axis, indicating abrupt chemical variation during the final stage of crystallisation. This type of zoning reflects discrete growth interruptions and rapid compositional shifts within the pegmatitic environment.
At the apex, the crystal displays a clearly legible three band chromatic structure, composed of a pale upper zone, a central reddish band and a second lighter zone beneath it. The upper and lower pale layers correspond to phases of reduced chromophore concentration, while the central band reflects a localised enrichment in manganese, responsible for the pink to red coloration.
This arrangement creates a striking and highly recognisable visual configuration, closely resembling the chromatic sequence of the Austrian flag. Importantly, this is not a superficial resemblance, but a direct consequence of real chemical stratification recorded within the crystal during its growth.
Below this terminal structure, the crystal continues into a uniform green prismatic body, characterised by a translucent to semi transparent appearance with subtle yellowish undertones. This section represents a more stable crystallisation phase, where elemental distribution remained consistent over time.
The prism is elongated and well defined, with visible longitudinal striations that confirm continuous growth along the c axis. These features, together with natural internal inclusions and surface irregularities, reinforce the specimen’s geological authenticity.
Under light, the contrast between the stable green body and the sharply defined terminal zoning becomes particularly evident. The red band retains strong chromatic identity, while the surrounding pale zones enhance separation and readability, allowing the full structure to remain clearly visible from multiple angles.
This crystal is not defined by colour alone, but by the coexistence of stability and abrupt chemical transition, preserved in a single, highly legible growth structure.

Collector’s Interest:
This specimen is defined by its terminal chemical stratification, a feature far less common than typical colour distributions in tourmaline crystals.
The presence of a clearly defined white red white banding, visually echoing the Austrian flag, adds an immediate and recognisable identity, while simultaneously representing a genuine geological process rather than an aesthetic coincidence.
For collectors, this piece offers both visual impact and mineralogical significance. It captures a precise moment of chemical instability during crystal growth, preserved with clarity and contrast, making it a highly instructive and distinctive specimen
Lapidary Potential:
Due to its slender dimensions, the crystal could theoretically be sectioned into small slices, potentially revealing the terminal zoning in cross section.
However, any cutting would irreversibly destroy the unique terminal banding, which represents the most significant feature of the specimen.
Its highest value lies in preservation as a natural crystal, where its full structural and chemical narrative remains intact.

Shipping and Handling:
All orders are shipped by Portuguese National Post.
• Dispatch time: within 1 to 3 business days after payment confirmation to Catawiki
• Transit time with CTT service: between 5 to 7 business days within europe and worldwide, depending on destination national post.

Photography and transparency:
All photographs are taken under controlled lighting conditions using a macro lens, carefully selected to present each specimen as accurately as possible.
No filters, colour enhancement, or artificial saturation are applied.
The lighting setup uses a calibrated 5500K light source, replicating neutral daylight to reveal natural tones, surface features, and internal characteristics. Under warmer or weaker indoor lighting, colours may appear slightly different, which is normal.
The purpose of this photographic process is documentation and representation, not visual enhancement. Images are intended to reflect the specimen faithfully as it appears under balanced natural light conditions.
Identification and ethics:
All specimens offered are natural and described to the best of our knowledge, based on direct sourcing, professional experience, and information provided by trusted suppliers working at the origin.
Every effort is made to ensure transparency and accuracy regarding identification, locality, and general characteristics, avoiding misleading statements about treatment, provenance, or nature.
Customs and import taxes:
Any customs duties, import fees, or local taxes applied by the destination country are entirely the responsibility of the winning bidder.
These charges are not included in the auction price or shipping cost and are determined by the buyer’s local authorities.
Guarantee and resolution:
Customer satisfaction is important. In the unlikely event of an issue such as loss, damage, or discrepancy, please contact us promptly through Catawiki’s messaging system.
Each case is handled individually and fairly, with appropriate solutions offered when justified.
Appreciation and commitment:
We sincerely thank you for your trust. Our work focuses on careful selection, accurate representation, and respectful presentation of mineral specimens with character and interest.
Each piece is chosen for its individual qualities rather than speculative or financial considerations. We aim to provide a transparent, reliable, and consistent experience for collectors at all levels.
