The name originates from Denbei Sasaki, a copper smith who served the Asano clan, the lords of Hiroshima Prefecture, in the early Edo period. He was called "Douchu" (copper bug) due to his dedication to his work. The piece is formed by hammering a copper plate with a mallet, applying a "tsuchime" (hammered) pattern to the surface, and finishing it through a process of straw-smoking and polishing.
