Dial and Hands
The dial is a visual delight, featuring a pristine silver surface with a subtle vertical brushed finish that catches the light beautifully. At twelve o'clock, the signature applied Rado anchor logo sits proudly in a deep red circle, while the nine o'clock position bears the crisp printed "MARSTRON" typography. The true focal point is the intricate black atomic globe emblem positioned just above the six o'clock date window, which perfectly encapsulates the era's fascination with science and space. The date window itself is framed by a stepped silver border and displays a striking red numeral on a white background. The applied faceted indices feature black inserts and warm, yellow-aged lume plots at their outer edges. The blocky, squared-off hour and minute hands mirror this design with black central stripes and matching lume, accompanied by a slender sweeping seconds hand. The dial is exceptionally clean, showing virtually no signs of spotting, moisture damage, or discoloration, presenting beautifully under magnification.
Case and Crystal
The 37mm stainless steel cushion case exudes quintessential 1970s heft and presence. It features a brushed upper surface that transitions into highly polished flanks, with the factory lines remaining visible despite honest, age-consistent surface scratches and light scuffs from normal wear. A uniquely scalloped crown is thoughtfully recessed into the case at the four o'clock position, maintaining the seamless silhouette. The watch is fitted with a domed crystal that provides clear visibility to the dial beneath, showing only the faintest micro-abrasions typical of vintage materials. The screw-down caseback is a highlight in itself, deeply engraved with the iconic Rado seahorse and anchor medallion, reading "Water-Sealed" alongside the clearly defined serial number 71017084.
Movement
Removing the caseback reveals the fascinating Rado Electronic caliber, a thirteen-jewel Swiss movement that bridges the gap between mechanical and quartz technologies. The golden plates are cleanly engraved with "RADO ELECTRONIC" and showcase the intricate blend of a traditional balance wheel driven by early electronic circuitry, including visible coils and transistors. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The timegrapher reads 2s to 8s/day with strong amplitude.
Strap
The watch is paired with a handsome black leather strap featuring distinctive contrasting white and brown stitching, complementing the vintage aesthetic perfectly while offering a comfortable fit on the wrist.
Condition
This Rado Marstron is in excellent vintage condition. The dial is the undeniable star, remaining remarkably crisp and free of distracting flaws. The stainless steel case retains its bold architectural shape, displaying moderate, honest wear in the form of light surface scratches that do not detract from its overall appeal. The electronic movement is exceptionally clean and well-preserved.
Dimensions
The stainless steel case measures a substantial 37 mm in diameter, excluding the recessed crown, offering a prominent and comfortable vintage footprint on the wrist.
Remarks
The Rado Marstron is a true conversation piece, perfectly capturing the optimistic, technology-driven zeitgeist of the 1970s. Its combination of a flawless thematic dial and an historically significant electronic movement makes it a standout addition to any serious vintage collection.
History
