This copper figure of Shuiyue Guanyin (Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara), from a private collection, measures 16 cm in height, 3.5 cm in width, and 7 cm in depth, and is in excellent condition. It is from a private devotional collection and stylistically reflects classical Ming dynasty artistry. The Bodhisattva is captured in the posture of royal ease (lalitasana), with the right leg raised and bent, resting upon a rocky dais, while the left leg hangs freely. This pose exudes a sense of serene contemplation and accessible compassion. Guanyin wears an ornate crown; the face is full and gentle, with downcast, half-lidded eyes and a subtle, knowing smile, conveying profound inner wisdom and boundless mercy. The figure is adorned with elegantly flowing celestial drapery, its layered folds rendered with succinct, fluid lines that evoke a gentle movement. Exquisitely detailed jeweled necklaces and ornaments adorn the form. A magnificent, pierced flaming mandorla serves as the resplendent backdrop. The copper is of fine, dense quality, its entire surface polished to a smooth luster and covered in a deep, warm chestnut-brown patina. Traces of the original gilding remain discernible in areas. Uniting profound religious sanctity with exceptional artistic expression, this figure is a superb and rare example among smaller Buddhist bronzes. It is, therefore, both a profound object of devotion and a treasured collectible. It is held in a private collection.
