Japanischer Holzkanban – Doppelseitig „Ashu Tsuho“ & „10-Momme Silver Note“ - Holz, Stahl - Japan - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

Museum-Grade Japanese Wooden Kanban – Double-Sided "Ashu Tsuho" & "10-Momme Silver Note" This is a rare, heavy-duty double-sided wooden shop sign (Kanban) from the Edo period, specifically representing the financial history of the Tokushima Domain (Awa Province). Authentic signs related to regional domain currencies are highly prized by collectors for their historical significance and bold calligraphy. One side features "Ashu Tsuho" (阿州通寶), a local currency issued by the Hachisuka clan of the Awa Province. The other side displays "Jummonme Ginsatsu" (拾匁銀札), advertising the exchange of 10-Momme Silver notes. Historical Background: The Role of the Money Changer During the Edo period, Japan operated under a complex "Triple Currency System" of gold, silver, and copper. Money changers (Ryogae-sho) acted as the precursor to modern banks, managing the exchange between national Shogunate currency and regional domain money (Hansatsu). This specific sign likely hung outside a prominent merchant house or exchange office in Awa, serving as a reliable landmark for traders needing to convert their local silver notes into liquid currency. Artistic & Antique Value Hand-carved from a single, thick slab of aged wood, the characters are executed in deep relief to ensure visibility from a distance. The iron ring at the top allowed it to be hung under the eaves of a traditional machiya storehouse. Its massive weight (over 2kg) and the rich, dark patina developed over centuries make it a stunning example of Mingei (Japanese Folk Art). Condition & Presence This piece remains in excellent antique condition with natural wear consistent with its age and outdoor use. It offers a unique window into Japan's feudal economic system and serves as a powerful interior statement piece for history enthusiasts or gallery displays. Product Specifications Dimensions: 45.2 cm x 28.5 cm x 3.2 cm Weight: 2,170 g Material: Solid Wood with original Iron hardware Origin: Japan (Tokushima/Awa Province) **PLEASE NOTE** Shipping Information: Items are shipped from Japan.
