Amarone della Valpolicella is an intense wine that showcases both the savoir-faire and technique of the winemakers and the richness of its terroir. Its history is relatively recent, as the first wine with this name was produced only in 1938. The controlled designation of origin (DOC) was recognized in 1968 and then elevated to the definitive level of controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) in 2010. The Corvina grape makes up the majority of the blend, with a percentage ranging from 40% to 95%. Rondinella is used primarily to complement the blend. The grapes are harvested early, while they still have good acidity, and are then dried on racks or in stackable crates inside special buildings. Once dehydrated, until they reach approximately 40% of their initial weight, they are vinified using the traditional method. The abundance of sugars means that the wines of this denomination have an alcohol content exceeding 14% vol. Full-bodied and with a high alcohol content, they feature rather intense tannins and particularly concentrated aromas of red fruits and spices.
