Mehrstöckiger Vorratsbehälter für Lebensmittel mit stilisierten Shou-Zeichen - Lackiertes Holz - Japan - Taishō Zeit (1912-1926)
A charming 7-tiered jûbako 重箱 (tiered food container/stacked picnic box) in carrying two-story frame, and with two covers. These are also better known as bentô boxes. Of rectangular form adorned with a stylized shou-characters. Accentuated with golden fundame 粉溜地 (matt lacquer) rims and diaper patterned rims.
Executed in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a glossy dark brown lacquered substrate. The interior coated with crimson red lacquer.
The carrying handle on top connected to two round back plates inscripted with (likely) the family name Miyayama 通山.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926)

Height 38 cm, Width 32.5 cm, Depth 17 cm.
Considering its age, in a very good condition with traces of wear consistent with age and use, like some craquelé on the covers at the side. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
Hanami, as a major festival celebrating one of the four seasons, came to be associated with tiered food boxes called jûbako. Often made of lacquered wood, the tradition of stacking them was not only for functionality but also to symbolize the desire for good fortune to “accumulate.”
