A lacquered wooden kanban 看板 (shop sign) advertising Naruto Gasuri 鳴門絣 (Naruto style Ikat) A traditional indigo-dyed cotton made in Naruto area of (formerly) Awa province, currently Tokushima Prefecture. Furthermore the (registered trade mark) kimono shop Asaoka 浅岡 is mentioned as wholesale dealer. Of rectangular form, the sign is finished in matt black lacquer and with inscriptions in gold lacquer. Adorned in the center with a large vibrant red sun with a flock of cranes flying past. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912) Dimensions: Height 45.5 cm; Width 60.5 cm; Depth 3 cm In good condition with traces of wear consistent with age, including minor lacquer losses. As such signs were traditionally displayed outdoors for many years, the natural weathering attests to the authenticity and original purpose of the piece.
