Faltbildschirm mit „One Hundred Boys at Play“ - Lackiertes Holz, Maulbeerpapier, Seide, Blattgold - Japan - Edo-Zeit, 18. Jahrhundert
A magnificent low six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a lively Kanô School-style painting on gold leaf, depicting karako 唐子 (Chinese children) at play within a pavilion set in a lush garden landscape by the water.
The theme "One Hundred Boys at Play" is a Chinese motif symbolising longevity, prosperity, and the success of future generations.
The scene unfolds across an open pavilion and its garden, where numerous children engage in a variety of playful activities. Some examine treasured objects, others play with gunbai (war fans), while groups gather near a bridge to fish or play around a water basin. The composition is rich in detail and movement, inviting closer viewing. Enveloped by dense clouds of attractive age-patinated gold leaf.
Executed in ink and colour on mulberry paper and gold leaf. Mounted with two silk borders, a narrow turquoise inner band and a broader navy blue outer border. Set within a red lacquered wooden frame.
