Faltbildschirm mit idyllischer Landschaft und Kranichen - Lackiertes Holz, Papier, Blattgold - Kanô School-style - Japan - Erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts (späte Edo-Zeit)
An outstanding, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Kanô School-style painting depicting a tranquil landscape with a gathering of cranes 鶴 (tsuru).
A serene composition unfolds around a calm river, where a gathering of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) is shown in a peaceful setting. Among them are Red-crowned Cranes 丹頂鶴 (tanchô-zuru) and White-naped Cranes 真鶴 (mana-zuru) with their chicks, standing and foraging along the water’s edge. Young pine saplings 松 (matsu) grow along the riverbanks. In the distance, mountain peaks emerge subtly through dense gold leaf clouds.
In Japanese symbolism, cranes and pine trees form a classic pairing associated with longevity and good fortune. Cranes are believed to live for a thousand years, while pine trees represent endurance and steadfastness.
Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two silk trims: a slender ecru brocade inner band and a broad dark gold outer band. Set within a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period).
Dimensions:
Total width: 348.4 cm (2 x 59.8 cm, 4 x 57.2 cm); Height: 175 cm
In very good condition considering its age, with minimal wear consistent with age and some restorations, including repapering to the reverse and reinforcement of the hinges. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be placed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, we will add a certificate of authenticity.
