Byôbu 屏風 (Faltbildschirm) - Seide, Papier, Lackiertes Holz, Silberblatt - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)

A captivating tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting depicting scenes of daily life. The composition presents a lively genre scene portraying figures from all walks of life, including both commoners and members of the aristocracy, engaged in travel and everyday activities. The scenes likely relate to one of the Five Routes 五街道 (Gokaidô), the main highways connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) with the provinces. On the left, travellers cross a bridge on foot and horseback, while others embark on boats along the river. In the upper section, figures pass a rural thatched dwelling set among rice fields. Toward the right, the narrative continues with people moving through village settings, resting and gathering along the roadside. The various scenes are set within softly oxidised silver leaf clouds, creating a flowing composition across the panels. Executed in ink and colour on silver leaf and mulberry paper. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims: a slender black inner band and a broader brown outer band. Set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware decorated with scrolling motifs. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912) Dimensions: Total width 350.4 cm (2 × 59.6 cm, 4 × 57.8 cm) Height 171.8 cm In very good condition considering its age, with wear consistent with age and restorations on both sides, including some repapering to the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be placed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
