Shoju Doll Studio(人形工房松寿) - Puppe Ichimatsu - 2010–2020 - Japan

This finely crafted Japanese doll was created by Koide Shoju (2nd generation), a skilled doll maker associated with the Shoju studio in Higashi-Osaka. Unlike mass-produced souvenir dolls, this piece originates from a dedicated workshop environment where artisans are directly employed and works are produced and sold under the studio’s own supervision, ensuring a high level of quality and artistic consistency. The doll presents a remarkably serene and lifelike expression. The delicately painted eyes, softly defined lips, and calm facial composition create a quiet presence that feels almost animate, reflecting the refined aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The head and limbs are formed using toso, a traditional material made from paulownia wood powder mixed with natural adhesives. The surface is finished with gofun, a fine shell-based pigment that produces the smooth, porcelain-like white texture characteristic of high-quality Japanese dolls. This technique, developed over centuries, gives the figure its distinctive depth and subtle luminosity. The hair is composed of natural fibers, carefully styled to complement the gentle expression of the face. The doll is dressed in a silk kimono (shoken), meticulously tailored using traditional methods. Each garment is individually crafted, resulting in subtle variations that ensure no two examples share the exact same combination of fabric and pattern. Notably, the kimono still retains its original temporary stitching threads, indicating that the piece has remained unused. With its balanced proportions and refined detailing, this work can be appreciated not only as a traditional doll but also as a sculptural object that embodies both textile artistry and figurative expression. This piece represents a compelling example of a studio-crafted Japanese artist doll, combining traditional materials, skilled workmanship, and a quiet, dignified presence. The doll is accompanied by its original box labeled “MATSUYOSHI DOLL,” confirming its origin from the workshop. Height: approx. 47cm Width: approx. 20cm The item itself weighs approximately 1,000g; however, due to its delicate nature, it will be securely packed with multiple layers of protective materials, resulting in a total shipping weight of approximately 3,000g. Although standard airmail options are available, EMS (Express Mail Service) will be used for this shipment to ensure faster and safer delivery. Given the fragile nature of the doll, a shorter transit time is preferred to minimize any risk during transportation. An IOSS number will be provided where applicable to help avoid double VAT charges within the EU. Please note that any import duties, VAT, or other taxes imposed by the destination country are the responsibility of the buyer. In some cases, customs authorities or the local courier may contact the recipient for clearance procedures. Buyers are kindly requested to respond promptly to such requests. If no contact is received, please regularly check the tracking information and contact the local carrier if the parcel appears to be held at customs or a delivery facility. If the item is returned to Japan due to failed delivery, non-response, or refusal by the recipient, the buyer will be responsible for return shipping costs as well as any additional reshipping fees.
