Ko-omote portrays a young woman of about sixteen to seventeen years of age. Its expression is intentionally delicate and ambiguous, appearing gently smiling from one angle and quietly sorrowful from another. In performance, even a slight movement of the actor’s head can bring out remarkably different emotions. The blackened teeth symbolise adulthood, an important traditional detail in this type of mask. The surface is finished with gofun, a traditional white pigment made from powdered shell, giving the face its soft and refined appearance. The mask is carefully carved from wood, and the reverse shows strong and attractive chisel marks. The inside bears the maker’s signature Motoyasu (基安). It comes with its black cord, a fine quality brocade mask bag, and a vintage 32-page booklet titled Noh Masks and Noh Costumes: Noda Shrine Collection, National Noh Theatre ’87 Autumn Special Exhibition. The booklet is not directly related to this mask itself, but serves as an interesting reference to the world of Noh. As a vintage item, it shows attractive age and character. There is overall wear, discolouration, and fading. Areas of the gofun surface have flaked across the face, and general rubbing is visible throughout. The brocade mask bag shows some stains from age and use. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 21.2 cm W 13.1 cm D 7 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
