Daalderop KMD - Aschenbecher - Kupfer, Holz, Glas - Kupfer und Holz

Daalderop Standing Ashtray in Copper, Glass and Ebonised Wood, Netherlands, ca. 1920s–1930s A Dutch Art Deco standing ashtray by manufacturer Daalderop (and marked underneath), dating from the 1920s to 1930s. The piece is executed in copper, glass and ebonised wood, with a tall, elegant silhouette that still carries traces of Art Nouveau in its decorative linework. The design is unusually refined for an object of everyday use. A slender dark wooden stem rises from a round copper base, with turned ebonised sections and warm rubbed highlights where the finish has softened over time. The copper base and upper bowl are decorated with stylised, vertical ornament: flowing lines, oval bead-like forms and small scroll details that give the piece its earlier Art Nouveau influence, while the overall form feels increasingly modern and architectural. At the top sits the copper ashtray bowl with the original glass insert. On the rim a removable copper ring with a cigarette holder, neatly concealing the original clear glass inset ashtray. The glass insert has a cut star motif to the base (as also seen in tea cabinets from the period). There are some chips around the glass rim, but these are completely covered when the copper ring is in place. Daalderop was founded in 1880 by J.N. Daalderop and became one of the better-known Dutch producers of household and decorative metalware. The company made tableware, kettles, pots, dishes and lamps, and later produced designs that moved toward Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. Before the Second World War, Meine Huisenga was among the firm’s most important designers, with Klaas van Aken also connected to the factory. More expressive Daalderop pieces from this period are more rare than their simpler domestic wares, which makes this standing ashtray a particularly interesting collector’s piece. The ashtray is in good antique condition overall, with a warm natural patina to the copper, age-related wear to the ebonised wood and some dents to the base. The glass insert has small chips to the rim, as mentioned. The piece can be unscrewed into several parts and will be shipped disassembled for safety. A beautifully eccentric Dutch smoking accessory: decorative, sculptural and full of period atmosphere. Stamped with Daalderop maker’s mark under base Condition: good antique condition; copper with patina; dents to base; glass insert with chips to Shipping: will be shipped disassembled for safety Dimensions Height: 73 cm / 28.7 in Width: 25 cm / 9.8 in
