Skulptur, Fired Clay Child’s Head, Jan de Schutter - 42 cm - Ton, Holz

Serene Child’s Head in Fired Clay by Jan de Schutter, Belgium, Mid-20th Century A large and expressive portrait head by Belgian sculptor Jan de Schutter (1910–1986), executed in (most probably) fired terracotta clay, and mounted on a dark wooden base. Jan de Schutter was a Belgian sculptor who was born in 1910 and died in 1986. His work consists of sculptures, especially bronzes and terracotta pieces, including titles such as Maya, Cabri, Jeune danseuse, Nude curled up, and also another Tête de jeune garçon (Head of a young boy) That is not this piece but it's quite similar. The sculpture has a life-size presence and a beautifully tactile surface. The material has the warm, earthy surface of fired roof tiles, hard and dense. In certain light the surface almost appears as painted bronze. The face has a serene, almost meditative expression. With its softly closed eyes and gentle modelling, the head has a remarkably calming presence, the kind of piece that changes the atmosphere around it. The hair is treated more freely, with visible handwork and lively movement, creating a beautiful contrast with the quiet stillness of the face. Signed “De Schutter” on the neck. Good condition. Stable and substantial on its wooden base. Provenance: Private collection. The collection included a broad range of decorative arts and collectible objects, gathered over many years.
