HISTORY and RARITY: The Nikkormat FS (known as the Nikomat FS in Japan) is a rare, entry-level 35mm SLR film camera introduced by Nikon in 1965. It was released alongside the Nikkormat FT as a more affordable, simplified alternative. While it was a commercial failure when new—primarily because photographers preferred the "high-tech" built-in meter of the FT—it is now one of the most sought-after Nikkormats for collectors. Production Volume: Estimated at only around 18,000 units, making it significantly rarer than the FT or FTN models. Value: Because it has no internal electronics or light meter to fail, it is often more reliable for long-term use than models that depend on discontinued 1.35v mercury batteries. KEY CHARACTERISTICS: Fully Manual (No Light Meter): Unlike almost every other Nikkormat model, the FS lacks a built-in light meter. This means it has no battery compartment, no ASA/ISO dial, and no internal exposure indicators in the viewfinder. No Mirror Lock-up: To reduce costs, Nikon also removed the mirror lock-up feature found on the FT model. Rugged Construction: Despite being a "budget" model, it features a heavy-duty, all-metal diecast body similar to the professional Nikon F. Lens Compatibility: It uses the classic Nikon F-mount. It is compatible with most "Non-AI" (Pre-AI) and AI/AI-S lenses, though it cannot provide metering info for them. Shutter: It uses a Copal Square vertical-travel metal focal plane shutter with speeds ranging from 1 second to 1/1000th plus Bulb. SUMMARY SPECIFICATIONS: Film Type 35mm Exposure Control Fully manual (Requires external meter or "Sunny 16" rule) Flash Sync 1/125 sec (via PC sync terminals; no built-in hot shoe) Weight Approximately 705g (body only) Self-Timer Built-in (approx. 10 seconds) CONDITION: Excellent vintage overall with few minor wear marks, very acceptable and not so noticeable. No flaws. All functions thoroughly tested and working OK. ELECTRICAL - not aplicable. MECHANICAL - everything tested and perfect - shutter speeds, mirror movement, winding lever, back cover opening and locking, lens release button, frame counter and reset, self timer, depth of field lever, etc.. The film compartment is mint condition and the shutter curtains are perfect with no signs of wear ! All buttons and selectors moving freely and smoothly. All sealing/damping sponges present, but partially showing some wear and ageing, should probably be replaced for a perfect condition. OPTICAL - no dust, fungus, specks or scratches inside the view finder and on the mirror and focusing screen, etc. - perfectly clean. COSMETICAL - note there's a couple spots where the silver finish has (probably) been retouched (back plate top behind serial number and top of the viewfinder - not very noticeable); the view finder top face shows very slight deformation (corrected); the base plate shows a very few very soft dents, neglectable. Otherwise, practically no paint/finish loss. Perfect leatherette parts. No scratches or dents, dings, nicks or scuffs all over. No cracks, no visible flaws, no fading to the letters (see pictures). No oxidations. No damaged edges and corners. Very clean outside and inside, no dust, specks and grease. Nikkormat front plate very few tiny dings top edge, insignificant. All visible in the detailed pictures. CAP: mint perfect, no wear or flaws. PACKING & SHIPPING: Worldwide, Low Cost ! (Economy Standard mail to USA is suspended Worldwide - shipping to US is currently available only by Private Carrier Company, at a more expensive cost). Package Includes: Item as described and carefully packed together with Catawiki Invoice.
