It is said that Hakodate produced iron, hence the casting of iron coins, but these were limited to circulation in Hakodate, Ezo (Hokkaido), Matsumae, and other areas. The obverse inscription is in regular script, read vertically, with elegant handwriting. There is also a version with the year inscribed on the reverse. The unique feature of this coin is that the initial castings had a round hole, but due to casting difficulties, it was later changed to an octagonal shape, a rare occurrence in coinage history.
