Kamakura-bori-Lackwaren-Set – Schminkschatulle & Schmuckbox mit geschnitzter Pfingstrose & - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert

Item Description A Matched Pair of Kamakura-bori Lacquerware: Vanity Chest with Drawers & Jewelry Box This exceptional set of two Kamakura-bori lacquerware pieces offers a rare opportunity to acquire a harmonious pair sharing the same distinctive aesthetic — a bold red and black carved lacquer finish with the characteristic nishiki-mon (tortoiseshell) ground pattern that has defined this centuries-old craft tradition. About Kamakura-bori (鎌倉彫) Kamakura-bori is a distinguished Japanese lacquerware tradition originating in the Kamakura period (1185–1333), initially developed by Buddhist craftsmen carving altar implements. Unlike Chinese carved lacquer, Kamakura-bori is carved from wood first, then finished with multiple layers of lacquer — typically in the signature red-over-black layering — creating the dramatic two-tone relief that makes each piece unmistakable. Today, Kamakura-bori is recognized as one of Japan's premier traditional crafts. Piece 1: Kamakura-bori Vanity Chest with Drawers (小鏡台 / Kogagami-dai) A portable vanity chest of elegant proportion, featuring a arched carrying handle with brass fittings and two pull-out drawers with metal knobs. The front face is dramatically carved with a bold botan (peony) in full bloom surrounded by the honeycomb nishiki ground, while the sides display the textured ground pattern alone, creating a pleasing contrast. The top opens to reveal a gilt-toned mirror — a beautiful and functional feature. The interiors of both drawers are finished in natural paulownia wood, pleasantly fragrant and gentle on stored items. Piece 2: Kamakura-bori Jewelry Box with Lock & Music Box (宝石箱) A generously sized jewelry box featuring the same red-and-black nishiki-mon ground as its companion piece, carved on the lid with a graceful ume (plum blossom) branch — a motif symbolizing elegance and the arrival of spring. The box opens with a functioning lock (key included) to reveal a richly appointed red velvet interior: a mirror set into the lid, multiple compartments, a ring roll, and a lower drawer — everything a serious jewelry collection demands. A music box mechanism is fitted, though it is currently non-functional. The front panel is carved with additional plum blossom and pine motifs. Acquiring both pieces together means a perfectly coordinated display for a dressing table or vanity corner, uniting the same craft tradition, color palette, and decorative vocabulary into a cohesive ensemble — far more striking than either piece alone. Neither piece bears a maker's signature, consistent with many fine Kamakura-bori workshop productions intended for personal use rather than exhibition. Size Piece 1 — Vanity Chest: Height: 30 cm Width: 28 cm Depth: 21 cm Piece 2 — Jewelry Box: Height: 12.5 cm Width: 34 cm Depth: 19 cm Weight Piece 1 — Vanity Chest: 1,688 g Piece 2 — Jewelry Box: 1,332 g Combined: approximately 3,020 g (3.02 kg) Condition Both pieces are pre-owned and in good overall condition consistent with age and use; the vanity chest has minor surface scratches but both drawers open and close smoothly, while the jewelry box shows no significant exterior damage, though the interior fabric has some soiling, a small area of velvet lining has been repaired, and the music box mechanism is non-functional — the lock and key work correctly. ★NOITICE★ This item is large and will be shipped via Japan Post surface (sea) mail.
