A Western Asiatic terracotta bowl glazed with black pigment. The sides of the bowl curve regularly from a thick, everted rim to a small, circular foot. The exterior displays dense concentric striations, possibly created from the wheel-spinning process. Earthy encrustations and signs of wear as consistent with age, such as scratches, flaking, minor chips to the edges of the rim and foot, some loss of pigment, and minor pitting. A minor chip to the rim of the bowl. The bowl has been repaired near the base of the walls, with the light-coloured repair and cracks still visible. Ancient Western Asiatic artistic production is characterised by finely potted, high fired terracotta vessels, usually enriched by dark pigmented geometric or zoomorphic decorations. Such vessels would have been produced to store food, but also as burial goods to be placed with the deceased in the tomb. Although the first examples of Ancient Western Asiatic pottery production display simple shapes and stylised decorative motives, terracotta wares evolved, embracing aesthetics driven by all the cultures which entered into contact with the Near East.
