Hagi-Chawan (萩茶碗) - Tenryu-gama (Tenryu Kiln 天龍窯) - Teeschale - Ton

Item Description This matcha bowl (chawan) is a fine example of Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki) produced by the Tenryu Kiln, one of the distinguished kilns in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The piece is presented in its original wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing the Tenryu kiln's seal. The bowl displays a refined pale celadon-grey glaze over the characteristic soft, porous clay body of Hagi ware. The exterior surface is covered in a subtle grey-cream glaze with beautifully expressed kannyū — the delicate network of fine craze lines that is one of Hagi ware's most celebrated features. Moving to the interior, the glaze transitions into a warm ivory tone accented by a soft blush of salmon-pink at the centre, creating a deeply meditative and poetic impression. The foot ring (kodai) is left partially unglazed in the traditional manner, revealing the warm, pale straw-coloured clay beneath. The underside shows a characteristic spiral trimming mark at the centre, along with soft blushing from kiln firing. A small impressed seal mark is visible on the interior floor, consistent with Tenryu Kiln's production practice. Hagi ware is ranked second only to Raku ware in the traditional tea ceremony hierarchy — expressed in the saying "Ichi-Raku, Ni-Hagi, San-Karatsu" (First Raku, Second Hagi, Third Karatsu) — and is prized above all for its "nana-bake" (seven transformations): the way the glaze gradually deepens and shifts in character through years of use as tea is absorbed through the crazing. This bowl is a faithful expression of that living, evolving aesthetic. Size Height: 6 cm Width: 15 cm Depth: 15 cm Weight 265 g Condition The bowl is in good overall condition with no chips or cracks; minor age-related marks and slight surface wear consistent with vintage Hagi ware are present. Artist Profile Tenryu Kiln (天龍窯 / Tenryu-gama) is a respected Hagi ware kiln located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Rooted in over 360 years of Hagi ceramic tradition, the kiln produces both classical tea wares faithful to the historical spirit of Hagi ware and contemporary pieces suited to modern living. Tenryu Kiln maintains traditional hand-thrown techniques while exploring new glazing directions, and operates both a gallery showroom and a pottery experience studio. The kiln is known among tea ceremony practitioners and collectors for its quality celadon and white Hagi ware. NOITICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally.
