Zwei Kyo-yaki Matcha-Schalen — Hashimoto Eiho Kenzan Maple & Kato Shoko Ninsei Plum Blossom - Keramik - 橋本永豊 Hashimoto Eiho(1969-), 加藤松香 Kato Shoko(1951-) - Japan - 1900–2000

Item Description 1: 橋本永豊 Hashimoto Eiho(1969-) — Kenzan-style Kyo-yaki Matcha Bowl with Autumn Maple Leaf Design (Momiji-mon Chawan) This exquisite matcha bowl is a masterwork in the Kenzan style (Ogata Kenzan-inspired), crafted by contemporary Kyoto ceramicist Hashimoto Eiho. The bowl is distinguished by its warm off-white crackle glaze (hibi-yu), which lends it the rustic elegance characteristic of the Kenzan tradition. Encircling the exterior is a vibrant hand-painted composition of autumn maple leaves (momiji) rendered in vivid red and lustrous gold overglaze enamels — a motif beloved in Japanese aesthetics for its evocation of the fleeting beauty of autumn. Gold brushwork streams along the lower register, suggesting the gentle flow of a river carrying fallen leaves, a classic Rinpa-influenced design concept. The interior shows a soft blush tone at the center, a hallmark of fine Kyo-yaki craftsmanship. The unglazed terracotta foot ring bears an impressed seal mark (in-kan) of the artist. The bowl comes in its original wooden presentation box (tomobako), inscribed and signed by the artist with the title "Kenzan-style Autumn Maple Leaf Bowl", guaranteeing its authenticity. An ideal piece for the tea ceremony or as a collector's display, celebrating Japan's most beloved autumn season imagery. Size Height: 7 cm Width: 12 cm Weight 221 g Condition The bowl is in good used condition with age-appropriate crazing in the glaze; there are some minor spots of gold wear and light surface marks consistent with age and use, with no chips or cracks. Artist Profile 橋本永豊 Hashimoto Eiho (b. 1969) is a Kyoto-based ceramicist who has dedicated himself to the revival of classical Kyo-yaki techniques. He completed a Ceramic Glaze Course in 2001 and graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Technical College in 2003. His work focuses on overglaze enamel painting in the traditions of Ogata Kenzan and the Rinpa school, producing tea ceremony wares of refined elegance. His pieces combine historical accuracy with a contemporary sensibility, earning appreciation among collectors of Japanese ceramics both in Japan and internationally. 2: 加藤松香 Kato Shoko(1951-) — Ninsei-style Kyo-yaki Matcha Bowl with Plum Blossom and Bush Warbler Design (Ume-ni-Uguisu-mon Chawan) A superb matcha bowl in the Ninsei style (Nonomura Ninsei-inspired), created by celebrated Kyoto ceramicist Kato Shoko. The bowl is beautifully formed with a graceful, gently flared silhouette, glazed in a luminous ivory-white with a delicate pink blush (soboro-gusuri) that suffuses the lower body — a signature characteristic of the Ninsei tradition and a hallmark of Kato Shoko's refined aesthetic. Encircling the exterior are exquisitely detailed hand-painted plum blossoms (ume) in white and red enamel with gold detailing, set against gnarled branches painted in warm brown and gold; perched among the blossoms is a bush warbler (uguisu) rendered in green, an auspicious combination deeply rooted in Japanese cultural symbolism representing the coming of spring. The interior is finished in ivory with a gold rim band, and the base carries the artist's impressed circular seal mark. The piece is accompanied by its original wooden box (tomobako) and a biographical card (tōreki), all in fine condition. An exceptional collector's piece embodying the finest tradition of Kyoto color ceramic art. Size Height: 8 cm Width: 12 cm Weight 191 g Condition In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or significant scratches; minor firing marks on the body are inherent to the ceramic process and do not detract from the piece. Artist Profile 加藤松香 Kato Shoko (b. 1951) is one of Kyoto's most distinguished color ceramic artists (iro-e tōgei-ka), renowned for his mastery of the Ninsei and Kenzan traditions of Kyo-yaki. Born in Kyoto in 1951, he studied at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute and trained in overglaze enamel painting (iro-e). He later established his studio near Chion-ji temple in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, where he continues to work today. Kato has participated in numerous exhibitions at major department stores in Tokyo and Kyoto, and has received multiple municipal and prefectural recognition awards.
