A Lot of Two Anglo-Saxon Scramasax Scabbard Chapes
7th-9th century A.D.
A rare lot of two Anglo-Saxon bronze scramasax chapes, each of elongated curved form with rivet holes for attachment to a scabbard. The larger example is more restrained, with a long tapering body and plain surface. The smaller chape is highly decorated on the obverse with punched and incised geometric ornament, including dotted motifs, triangular patterns, and bordered bands following the curved outline.
Both pieces are in excavated condition, with age-related surface wear, green patina, encrustation, minor losses, and old breaks, yet retaining clear and recognisable forms.
An excellent and unusual lot of early medieval weapon fittings, ideal for collectors of Anglo-Saxon antiquities, early arms, or archaeological bronze artefacts.
Length 12.5 and 8.9 cm.
Provenance: British collection, 1970s-1990s.
Certificate of authenticity enclosed.
Shipping inside EU only.
