Indonesisch. Keris – Java/Madura – Straight Blade with Floral Sheath c. 1900–1930/1940 (Ohne mindestpreis)

Indonesian Keris – Java/Madura – Straight Blade with Floral Sheath – c. 1900–1930/1940 Catawiki Description Indonesian keris, probably from Java/Madura, with a straight blade (lurus), wooden hilt and decorative sheath. The total length in the sheath is approximately 45 cm. The keris has a straight iron/steel blade with clear signs of age, oxidation and corrosion. Due to the heavy surface oxidation, the pamor pattern cannot be reliably identified from the photographs. The blade has the asymmetrical construction typical of keris blades. The hilt is made of dark wood and has a curved form with decorative details. Below the hilt is a metal fitting/ring with small coloured elements. The sheath has a broad wooden upper section (warangka) with floral decoration on a light-coloured material. The metal sheath covering (pendok) is also decorated with floral ornamentation. Based on its form, decoration and comparison with similar Java/Madura kerises, this example can cautiously be dated to the late 19th to first half of the 20th century, with the most likely working date being c. 1900–1930/1940. The blade may be older than the mounting, but this cannot be confirmed due to its state of preservation. Condition Used antique condition. The blade shows heavy oxidation and corrosion. The sheath has visible wear, cracks and damage, especially around the broad upper section. The metal sheath covering shows discolouration, wear and age-related traces. The hilt is comparatively well preserved, with normal signs of use. Dimensions Length in sheath: approx. 45 cm. Origin / Dating Indonesia, probably Java/Madura. Probably c. 1900–1930/1940, possibly with an older blade.
