A Large Colima Terracotta Ball Player Figure, Western Mexico, 4th Century B.C. to 1st Century A.D. Impressive and rare large-scale Colima terracotta figure depicting a ball player (jugador de pelota), standing 43 cm in height. The figure is portrayed with characteristic Colima style features: a distinctive helmet-like headgear with a central crest, expressive facial features, a broad chest with a decorative circular pectoral, and dynamic posture with one arm raised and the other holding a ritual staff or bat. The surface shows a rich dark reddish-brown slip with areas of lighter encrustation, typical of ancient burial pieces. Figures of ball players are among the most iconic and symbolically important representations in Colima art, closely related to the Mesoamerican ballgame, ritual, and cosmology. Large examples of this quality and size are exceptionally rare on the market.
