Large Motoko Ishii Modular Glass Lamp Staff Leuchten IF Award 1974
Designed by Motoko Ishii for Staff Leuchten, this large modular lamp is one of the most celebrated examples of German Space Age lighting from the 1970s. Winner of the prestigious IF Design Award in 1974, the design perfectly captures Ishii’s pioneering exploration of modularity, light, and architectural form.
This example is composed of seven individual modules arranged in a sculptural geometric composition measuring an impressive 50 x 50 cm. Each module combines a faceted clear glass diffuser with a chrome-plated structure, creating a sophisticated interplay of transparency, reflection, and light. Selected surfaces feature a semi-metalized treatment that enhances the lamp’s crystalline appearance and produces constantly changing reflections throughout the composition.
When illuminated, the piece transforms into a luminous architectural object. The faceted glass elements refract and multiply the light source, while the mirrored surfaces create depth and visual complexity from every viewing angle. The result is both functional lighting and a sculptural statement, characteristic of the most innovative German lighting designs of the period.
Originally conceived as a modular system, the design could be configured as a wall lamp, ceiling fixture, or table lamp, reflecting the versatility that made the model an icon of 1970s lighting design.
Today, Motoko Ishii’s work for Staff Leuchten is increasingly sought after by collectors of Space Age and modernist lighting. This large-format example offers exceptional visual presence and stands as a highly collectible piece of award-winning German design.
