About Shippo-yaki (七宝焼) Shippo-yaki (Japanese Cloisonné Enamel) is a traditional Japanese decorative art form that involves fusing finely ground glass (enamel) onto a metal or ceramic surface at high temperatures. The term "shippo" literally means "seven treasures," a reference to the luminous, jewel-like appearance of the finished enamel, reminiscent of precious stones. Originating in China and introduced to Japan around the 7th century, cloisonné enamel flourished particularly during the Edo (1603–1868) and Meiji (1868–1912) periods, becoming an important export art. In Japan, artisans developed highly refined techniques, including translucent enamels, intricate wirework (cloisonné), and smooth-polished surfaces without visible metal borders, known as "musen shippo" (wireless cloisonné). Modern Japanese shippo-yaki artists continue to evolve the craft, experimenting with forms, textures, and color compositions, while respecting the tradition’s deep-rooted aesthetic sensibility. Today, shippo-yaki is regarded both as a functional craft and as a high art form, prized by collectors and tea practitioners for its visual depth, technical precision, and enduring beauty.
