Taíno Black Diorite Idol (Zemí) – 10th to 15th Century AD
A finely carved Taíno stone idol (zemí) dating to the 10th to 15th Century AD. Executed from a dense black stone, likely diorite, the figure displays the distinctive iconography of Taíno spiritual art with oversized circular eyes, a prominent open mouth, stylized ears, and carefully engraved geometric motifs covering both the front and reverse. The composition combines anthropomorphic and supernatural features characteristic of ceremonial zemís used throughout the Greater Antilles as embodiments of ancestral and divine forces. The intricate linear decoration, symmetrical design, and highly polished surface demonstrate remarkable lapidary skill and reflect the important ritual role such objects held within Taíno society. An exceptional example of pre-Columbian Caribbean stone carving distinguished by its strong visual presence and extensive engraved ornamentation.
