A Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp (Lucerna), 1st to 3rd Century A.D. Charming and well-preserved small Roman terracotta oil lamp measuring approximately 7 cm in length. The lamp features a classic elongated boat-shaped body with a short nozzle for the wick, a large central filling hole, and a small hole at the rear for suspension or handling. The surface shows attractive areas of orange-red terracotta tone contrasting with a greyish patina from burial. This type of simple, functional oil lamp was widely used throughout the Roman Empire for domestic lighting. Small examples like this were very common in households and are characteristic of the Early to High Imperial period.
