Amazigh-Tontopf - Ait Baha, Hochland von Souss - Terracotta - Marokko - Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts
A fine example of Amazigh (Berber) domestic pottery from the Souss highlands of southwestern Morocco.
The vessel is of low, wide-bodied form raised on a footed pedestal base, with a short lateral spout and a single loop handle. The exterior surface bears horizontal incised ribbing
characteristic of the regional tradition, displaying a warm ochre and sienna patina consistent with age and use. The piece was formed not on a potter's wheel but by hand-coiling and shaping, a technique historically associated with Berber women potters of the Souss region. Such vessels were made for practical use at family gatherings and ritual celebrations, likely aployed for the storage or serving the olive oil. The natural unglazed terracotta has developed a rich surface encrustation and mineral patination over decades, lending the piece an authenticity difficult to replicate. The vessel is presented on a later decorative silver-toned metal tray, not original to the piece and not comes together.
