sylvan hublet - Teekanne - Töpferware - Teekanne Mid Century

This striking handmade ceramic teapot is a rare example of Belgian mid-century studio pottery by renowned artist Sylvain Hublet (1905-1988), also occasionally listed under the variant "Sylvain Sttublet" due to stylistic interpretations of his cursive signature. Hublet, based in the historic pottery region of Bouffioulx, Belgium, was celebrated for his distinctive stoneware pieces featuring beige and earthy glazes combined with bold black applied reliefs. This oversized teapot exemplifies his signature style: a textured beige-pinkish body with dramatic high-relief mascarons (grotesque or mythical face masks) in glossy black glaze. These masks, often depicting expressive human-like figures, are thought to evoke ancient traditions of warding off evil spirits—a charming folklore touch that adds to the piece's character. The teapot has an organic, sculptural form with a curved handle and spout shaped like stylized horns or branches, a flared lid with sunburst-like petal detailing, and a knob resembling an abstract head or flame. The dramatic contrast between the matte speckled body and shiny black accents gives it a modern yet timeless Art Deco-inspired feel, perfect for mid-century modern or boho interiors. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs visible in the photos. Typical minor crazing or glaze variations expected for handmade 60+ year-old stoneware. It appears primarily decorative due to its size and weight, though it could function as a teapot with care. Dimensions: Width (spout to handle): 39 cm (15.35 inches) Height (including lid): 30 cm (11.8 inches) Weight: approx. 4 kg (8.8 lbs) – substantial and hefty! Signature: Incised artist mark on the base – typical of Hublet's work.
