Japanese Urushi Lacquer Natsume (Tea Caddy): Gold Maki-e & Raden Inlay with Violet Motif
Overview:
This is a charming example of traditional Japanese lacquer art (Urushi), crafted specifically as a Natsume (matcha tea caddy) for the Japanese tea ceremony (Chado).
The piece features a refined Sumire (violet) motif. The elegant leaves and stems are meticulously rendered using Gold Maki-e (a traditional technique of sprinkling gold powder onto wet lacquer). Originally, the violet blossoms were fully detailed with Raden (iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay). The contrast between the deep, glossy black lacquer and the luxurious gold creates a striking visual harmony that embodies the serene aesthetics of Japanese tea culture.
Dimensions:
Width: Approx. 6.8 cm
Height: Approx. 4.5 cm
Condition Report (Please Read Carefully):
Condition: Fair / As-Is
Raden Loss: Please be fully aware that there is noticeable peeling and loss to the Raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay on the flower blossoms.
General Wear: There are fine scratches and minor surface wear on the lacquer consistent with its age and previous use.
This piece is being offered in its current, "as-is" condition. While still a beautiful display piece, we strongly advise reviewing all provided photographs carefully—especially close-ups of the floral motif—to assess the extent of the inlay damage before placing a bid.
