19th Century Grand Tour Micro Mosaic Pendant / Locket with Butterfly Motif – Italy, Rome – c. 1870–1900
A beautiful and highly collectible Italian Grand Tour micro mosaic pendant or locket dating from the late 19th century, featuring an exceptionally detailed butterfly rendered in thousands of hand-set glass tesserae.
The central panel displays a striking butterfly composed of microscopic glass tiles in vibrant shades of emerald green, gold, amber, orange, and deep red, meticulously arranged against a brilliant white micro-mosaic background. The precision of the workmanship is remarkable, with the tesserae preserved in excellent condition and displaying outstanding detail and color variation.
The butterfly is surrounded by an elegant ornamental border decorated with floral motifs in white, green, and blue enamel or micro mosaic, framed by twisted rope-style metal borders typical of Italian Grand Tour jewelry. Such naturalistic subjects were highly sought after by travelers visiting Rome during the Victorian era and remain among the most desirable themes for collectors today.
The pendant is fitted with a large decorative triangular bail featuring geometric filigree-style ornamentation, consistent with Italian craftsmanship of the period.
The reverse contains a glazed compartment protected by a removable glass cover, originally intended to hold a miniature photograph, lock of hair, or sentimental keepsake. The interior exhibits age-related patina consistent with its age and authentic use.
