Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - Eternal Love in Brass

Eternal Love in Brass is a sculptural work from the Art with Nails series by Tijs Dragtsma. The image does not arise through paint, print or digital reproduction. It is constructed through impact. Hundreds of precisely positioned brass nails penetrate a deep black acrylic glass surface, forming two figures suspended in a quiet moment of intimacy. From a distance the composition appears minimal and serene. Up close, the work reveals a complex landscape of depth, shadow and reflection. Each nail creates a micro-sculptural presence. Together they form a spatial image that shifts depending on light and viewing angle. The contrast between hardened brass and smooth acrylic glass creates a deliberate material tension. Strength meets fragility. Force meets clarity. The acrylic glass absorbs light while the brass heads capture and reflect it, allowing the image to breathe within the darkness. The figures are not merely depicted. They emerge through rhythm, repetition and controlled physical impact. What appears soft and emotional is built from industrial precision. While part of a limited edition, each piece retains subtle variations due to the physical impact process, making every work materially individual in its depth, shadow and surface tension. Eternal Love in Brass reflects connection beyond surface. Not a fleeting gesture, but a presence that exists in balance. Between distance and closeness. Between solidity and light. About Art with Nails Art with Nails is a self-developed artistic medium in which imagery emerges through the precise placement of steel or brass nails into acrylic glass. Rather than applying pigment, Dragtsma constructs form through repetition, rhythm and controlled force. The works are defined by sculptural depth, material contrast and the interaction between light and shadow. Each nail functions as an independent structural element within a larger spatial composition, allowing the image to transform as illumination shifts. The dialogue between metal and acrylic glass is central. The hardness of steel or brass interacts with the refined surface of the acrylic glass, creating tension, clarity and dimensional presence. Every piece is conceived as a physical event. Built through precision. Defined by light. About the Artist – Tijs Dragtsma Tijs Dragtsma is a Dutch contemporary artist and founder of TD Fine Art Studio. His practice operates at the intersection of material, structure and light, with a strong focus on developing distinct artistic languages rather than following established traditions. He is widely recognised for his Art with Nails series, in which hundreds to thousands of steel or brass nails form sculptural portraits that transform with light and viewing angle. Through precision and repetition, he translates digital mapping into physical presence. Since beginning his artistic practice in 2024, his works have entered private collections across Europe, Asia and the United States, and have been presented internationally. His work is driven by experimentation, technical control and a long-term vision centred on material integrity and spatial experience. All works are conceived and produced in his studio in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
