2007 & 2011 Johann Donaubaum Neuburger - Wachau

This lot comprises two beautifully matured, high-end expressions of the rare Neuburger variety from the steep terraced vineyards of Spitz an der Donau. Bottle 1: Johann Donabaum Neuburger "Spitzer Biern" Reserve 2007 (750ml) Bottle 2: Johann Donabaum Neuburger Smaragd 2011 (750ml) Region: Wachau, Austria Bottler: Estate bottled by Weingut Johann Donabaum, Laaben 15, 3620 Spitz an der Donau, Austria. Condition Report (Both Bottles) Fill Level: Neck (to maximum Base Neck) Classification: Impeccable. For white wines of this age (15 and 19 years old, respectively), maintaining a strict neck fill is proof of cold, motionless, professional cellar storage. The corks have maintained a perfect seal. Label Condition: Excellent (Both labels are perfectly clean, flat, completely intact, and completely free from typical cellar-damp damage or scuffing). Closure Condition: Excellent (Original capsules are perfectly firm, clean, and show no signs of corrosion or leakage). Ratings & Critical Acclaim 2007 "Spitzer Biern" Reserve: 94 Falstaff Points Tasting Note Summary: Highly praised upon maturity by critics for its immense longevity, displaying deep nutty undertones, complex creamy textures, and an exceptionally long, powerful finish. 2011 Neuburger Smaragd: 93 Falstaff Points Tasting Note Summary: Ranked directly alongside the region's top elite (matching Franz Hirtzberger's expression for the vintage). Noted for its incredible yellow tropical fruit extract, robust substance, and vibrant mineral core. The Terroir & Historical Context Neuburger is a legendary, natural cross of Roter Veltliner and Sylvaner. While it was once dominant in the Wachau, the immense physical difficulty of cultivating it on steep terraces has caused many growers to rip it out. Hansi Donabaum has remained a fierce protector of the variety. The Spitzer Biern vineyard is characterized by barren, weathered primary rock (Urgestein) mixed with slate and paragneiss. Because the Spitzer Graben acts as a funnel for cold night winds coming from the Waldviertel, the grapes experience extreme temperature shifts. This forces the Neuburger vines to develop thick skins, resulting in wines of immense extract, texture, and natural high alcohol (reaching up to 15% ABV in these ripe years), while retaining a lively mineral backbone. Drink or Cellar? (Lot Profile) Status: Fully Matured / Peak Secondary & Tertiary Expression. Description: This lot represents a rare masterclass in the aging capabilities of premium Neuburger. The 2007 Reserve has moved into a majestic tertiary phase, showing notes of roasted hazelnuts, dried pear, white tobacco, and a velvety, oily texture. The 2011 Smaragd—coming from a warm, powerhouse vintage—is at its absolute zenith, showcasing caramelized citrus peel, walnut cake, forest honey, and a deep, saline minerality. Both wines should be served at roughly 12°C in Burgundy bowls and enjoyed over the next 3–5 years (through 2029–2031).
