Tabakgefäß - Töpferware - Chief Tabakglas

A beautifully hand-painted figural tobacco jar (humidor), made in Austria circa 1890-1910, at the height of Victorian pipe-smoking culture. The jar is modeled as the head of a Native American chief, his magnificent feathered headdress forming the removable lid, decorated in soft blues, creams, and earthy browns. The face is exceptionally well rendered, with hooded eyes, strong angular features, and vivid red lips giving him a dignified, weathered expression. His clothing is painted in deep greens and pinks. Slipcast in white earthenware and finished with a hand-applied, majolica-style polychrome glaze, the jar bears clear impressed production marks on its unglazed base: a four-digit model number, "6609," accompanied by a secondary number, "31." These impressed numerals are consistent with the serialization systems used by several prominent Bohemian/Austrian majolica manufacturers of the period, such as Johann Maresch or Bernard Bloch, though no printed factory mark is present to confirm the specific maker. Condition is honest and consistent with over 100 years of age, with some browning in the deeper crevices and minor glaze wear to the forehead area, but no chips, cracks, or repairs. Complete with its original, well-fitting lid. Approx. 18cm tall x 20cm wide. Will be carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in a double-walled box with additional padding for safe delivery
