Michael Joseph (1941-) - Drunk under table & french can-can champagne advert

Michael Joseph “Drunk Under the Table” - London, 1975 Original Early Darkroom Print – Hand-Signed & Inscribed by the Photographer A wonderfully eccentric example of Michael Joseph's early advertising work, Under the Table transports us into a richly theatrical world where Victorian refinement gives way to comic disorder. Set beneath the arches of an elegant garden pavilion, the photograph unfolds like a scene from a forgotten novel. Well-dressed gentlemen in top hats gather around a lavish table while, almost unnoticed amongst the festivities, a bearded figure reclines on the ground beside an ornate silver samovar. Around him, conversations continue, glasses are raised, and costumed guests drift through the scene as though nothing unusual has occurred. The image perfectly illustrates the qualities that would later make Michael Joseph one of London's most sought-after advertising photographers: an instinct for visual storytelling, meticulous staging, and an ability to orchestrate large groups of people into compositions that feel simultaneously spontaneous and carefully constructed. What is particularly fascinating is the photograph's provenance. The reverse bears a handwritten note describing it as an early advertising image created in London in 1975, together with his title "Drinking Under the Table". The original archive label from the photographer's London studio also remains attached to the backing board, providing a direct connection to Joseph's working archive. Viewed today, the photograph feels almost cinematic. Every character appears to be participating in a different story, inviting the viewer to construct their own narrative from the countless details scattered throughout the composition. The result is humorous, slightly surreal, and endlessly rewarding to revisit. Created entirely in-camera decades before digital manipulation existed, the photograph showcases the craftsmanship, imagination and logistical skill that became hallmarks of Joseph's career. Title: Under the Table (also inscribed "Drinking Under the Table") Photographer: Michael Joseph Location: London Photo taken: 1975 Print Type: Early darkroom print Signature: Hand-signed by Michael Joseph Annotations: Photographer's handwritten title, location and date Presentation: Original archive mount size 39,3cm tall by 32cm wide Reverse: Original Michael Joseph studio archive label and handwritten provenance notes Provenance: Directly from the photographer's personal archive Condition: Vintage condition with age-related wear to mount and backing board consistent with an authentic working archive piece Far more than a decorative photograph, this is a rare archival object that documents the formative years of Michael Joseph's career. Combining wit, spectacle and remarkable attention to detail, it offers collectors an opportunity to acquire an original signed print from the period in which Joseph was developing the visual language that would later define his celebrated advertising work. #MichaelJoseph #UnderTheTable #DrinkingUnderTheTable #VintagePhotography #DarkroomPrint #BritishPhotography #LondonPhotography #AdvertisingPhotography #1970sPhotography #HandSignedPhotography #NarrativePhotography #TableauPhotography #PhotographicArchive #AnaloguePhotography #PhotographyCollector
